Marvel's Wolverine Is a Success Among Fans, Less So Among Critics

The long-awaited Marvel’s Wolverine launched today and players are absolutely loving it. The game has a rating of 4.85 on the PlayStation Store.

Metacritic currently has Wolverine sitting at a Metascore of 77. User ratings are still pending at this time.

Meanwhile, outlets like IGN and GameSpot gave Wolverine notably lower scores. Both sites rated Wolverine a 6/10, citing repetitive combat and a linear design. IGN acknowledges many of the same strengths players seem to love, but assigns dramatically more weight to repetition and mechanical variety when arriving at the final score. This is consistent with IGN’s review history, which has placed significant weight on gameplay mechanics, with strong stories and characters not always being enough to overcome repetitive or frustrating systems.

GameSpot’s score appears to hinge less on technical shortcomings and more on the reviewer’s belief that Wolverine plays things too safe and doesn’t sufficiently push Insomniac’s established design formula. In other words, many of GameSpot’s criticisms stem not from Wolverine failing at what it attempts to do, but from the reviewer wanting the game to push beyond the design conventions established by Insomniac’s previous titles.

GamesRadar, also giving Wolverine a 6/10, actually talks about the game lacking in quite a few places. They felt the game’s story was messy and structurally weak. They stated that the combat, while decent, was underdeveloped. Their review gives off the overall feeling that the game is fine, but Wolverine deserved better.

For contrast, Game Informer gave Wolverine an 8.5/10. The outlet praises the combat in Marvel’s Wolverine, stating, “From one encounter to the next, the extremely M-rated battles that ensue are deeply satisfying and smartly balanced.” The article even teases that there’s a long-awaited fight between Wolverine and another Marvel character. How tantalizing. It still calls the story linear, but says it doesn’t “wear out its welcome.”

These are only a handful of the reviews out there, but I wanted to highlight a few different perspectives you might come across while looking around. Definitely give the full reviews a read and decide for yourself whether Wolverine sounds like something you’d enjoy!
